I'm a huge fan of the work sabbatical. Both Apple and Palm offered them when I worked there, and I got within months of exercising sabbaticals at both before I left for new opportunities. A fact in itself which might argue that sabbaticals have to be offered earlier in an employee's life cycle ;-)

You're right that they need to be offered earlier, and it's happening. While the average career sabbatical used to be offered every 7 years, that's decreasing to 4-5. We track sabbaticals offered by companies.http://tiny.cc/TSbjX We're on a mission to ensure every career ladder has at least one sabbatical - just as Sagmeister poses, why not take 5 years off of your retirement and intersperse those throughout your work life for sabbaticals?
